For undergrads interested in RAYA
-
Tasks vary depending on our active study phases, but research assistants generally contribute to the fundamental building blocks of our research studies. This includes data entry and management, literature reviews, preparing study materials, assisting with recruitment and data collection, and participating in weekly lab meetings.
-
To gain meaningful experience and see a project through, we generally ask for a commitment of 6 to 10 hours per week for at least two consecutive semesters. This time includes individual tasks, project work, and attending our mandatory lab meetings.
Specific expectations vary slightly depending on the type of research experience each student is completing (e.g., stipend, hourly, course credit).
-
There are several ways to get involved depending on your eligibility, funding needs, and schedule:
First-Year Scholars Program (Paid Stipend): A program designed for students in their first year at KSU (with fewer than 30 transfer credits, excluding AP/dual enrollment). You must apply directly through the KSU FYS program.
Directed Study (PSYC 4400): Earn official course credit for your research activities within the lab.
Volunteer Positions: Join the lab as a volunteer researcher to gain hands-on experience without a course or funding commitment.
University Research Funding: Apply for student research funds directly through KSU alongside a faculty mentor.
-
KSU offers several internal funding programs that can cover research costs and/or provide student stipends. You will work with a faculty mentor to apply for these:
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP): Offers a paid stipend for intensive summer research.
RCHSS Student Research Fund: Available specifically for students with majors in the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
-
Yes! Beyond KSU's internal grants, there are national programs that support undergraduate research in psychology:
APA SUPER Fellowships: The American Psychological Association offers Summer Undergraduate Psychology Experience in Research fellowships.
Psi Chi Funding: If you are a member of the international honor society in psychology, you can apply for dedicated research funds, scholarships, and conference travel grants.
Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR): The Psychology Division provides dedicated research and travel grants for active student scholars.
-
Current Status: We are not actively recruiting new undergraduate research assistants. However, openings change semester by semester, and we review our interest pool when spots open up.
If you would like to be considered for future openings, please take a few minutes to:
Review our work: Take a look at our current projects and recent publications. Does the type of research we are conducting align with your career goals and interests?
Identify your pathway: Check out our avenues for involvement (listed above) to see which option best fits the type of experience you hope to gain.
Submit the undergraduate interest form: Once you've completed steps 1 and 2, please complete our interest form. This helps us get in contact with interested students quickly when opportunities become available.
(Note: You must log in with your KSU NetID to complete the form.)
